In 1952, Willy Breitling took the logarithmic slide rule he had already pioneered on the Chronomat and mounted it around the dial of a wrist-worn chronograph. The result was a watch that could multiply, divide, and calculate fuel burn and rate of climb on the fly—literally. Two years later, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) adopted it as its official timepiece, and the “navigation timer” became the Navitimer. It went on to orbit the Earth on astronaut Scott Carpenter's wrist in 1962, and it remains one of the most recognizable pilot's watches ever made.

What Makes the B01 Different
The modern Navitimer B01 Chronograph is powered by Breitling's in-house Caliber B01, a column-wheel automatic chronograph with a 70-hour power reserve and COSC certification. It is available in 41mm, 43mm, and 46mm stainless steel cases, as well as rose gold variants. The 43mm version—arguably the sweet spot for most wrists—measures 13.6mm thick.
But the movement is only half the story. The other half is the bezel. The Navitimer B01's circular slide rule is not decorative. Rotate the bidirectional bezel and you can compute airspeed, fuel consumption, rate of climb, and unit conversions without touching your phone . How It Wears
The current-generation Navitimer B01 softened some of the original's visual aggression. A flattened slide rule and domed sapphire crystal create the illusion of a sleeker profile, while alternating polished and brushed surfaces keep the case from feeling slab-like. The return of the AOPA wings at 12 o'clock is a deliberate nod to the watch's aviation heritage, and the new blue, green, and copper dial options give the Navitimer a broader appeal without diluting its identity.
Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, and the crown does not screw down. This is not a dive watch. It is a desk watch, a cockpit watch, and a travel watch—a distinction worth making before you buy.
Who Should Buy It
If you want a chronograph with genuine historical weight and a mechanical party trick that nobody else at the table can match, the Navitimer B01 is difficult to argue with. It predates the Daytona and the Speedmaster, and it has spent seven decades earning its place on the wrists of people who actually needed to calculate things. The slide rule may be an anachronism in the GPS era, but that is exactly why it still matters.
